Silence of the night

It is late in the evening.

Suddenly I am aware of the silence that has taken over.

Very typical night here at home. I hear some dog howling far away. Background noise is mix of sounds from Cicadas and crickets. Few occasional croaking of frogs from the paddy fields in front.

Raju, the neighbourhood dog is waiting patiently for me to feed him some biscuits.

If I listen carefully I can hear the wall clock making tick tick sound. When I pay attention to it, I hear many other strange noises too.I don't know which insects are making such sounds.

I hear no other sounds.

I've grown fond of this silence. It is calming, strengthening. Silence sounds very permanent.

I saw fireflies tonight.

I saw fireflies tonight.
I can not recall the last time I saw fireflies. Its been so long.

It is an immensely satisfying experience. Especially when you see one unexpectedly.
I've been thinking of fireflies for last few weeks. Every time I stepped out in the night, I was paying extra attention to notice fireflies.

Tonight, very unexpectedly I saw one. In the distance, in the garden in front. Such immediate, immense burst of joy

Its totally dark out and I see tiny speck of light. On, off, on off, each time the speck keeps moving around.

Soon, I noticed that its very hilarious to predict its path and fail utterly. Firefly is so smoothly random in its path, that it always surprises me.

Why do fireflies make such light?

Some millions of years ago, an insect's DNA went through a mutation that caused the insect's bum to light up? And that helped the DNA to propagate better?

Such absurdity.

It has to be a prominent mutation, because to survive such colossal randomness and still survive is an astronomical chance. If it survived that long, it is very possible that this 'bum light' must help the insect to mate. Thus helping the DNA propagation. First step of the whole mating process, perhaps.

Some such logic.

Much easy to say "Its magic" and just enjoy the firefly show.

The Red Box

A slice of toast, half a glass of orange juice and a bite of an apple. That's all she ate for breakfast. You see, she woke up late today. She was waiting till late last night for her man to come home. He didn't, at least that's what she thinks.

She woke up to find no sign of him at home either. But there are subtle misplaced things around, wet bathroom floor and the mild perfume odor tell her that he might have been home late last night and left early this morning.

Well, time to rush to work. Go through the routine at home as quick, careless as possible.

She stepped out of the home and locked her door. Just before she closed it, she noticed a red box on the side of the couch. What is that?

No time to go back check, gotta catch the cab to office.

She couldn't stop thinking of the red box the whole day. She even did a mental math to see if she could come home to unbox the red box during lunch break. She decided it's a bit childish to actually do that.

She isn't spontaneous as she used to be. That spontaneous spirit is what attracted him to her, he used to say. What happened in the last few years, she wonders every now and then. The magic seem to have worn off.

What is that red box, why is it there ? Did he drop it off ? Is it a gift ? What's happening, she wandered off in her chain of thoughts during the tea break. Should she mention it to her colleague? Well, she didn't. She isn't that careless these days.

The evening rush hour only made it worse for her. She came home, and without any effort she walked to the couch.

Red box is gone.

Year 2018, Paris agreement for fighting climate change has become a joke. Each country is now protecting their own economical interests. Massive number of climate refugees are causing civil riots in many countries.

Year 2020, scientists discover a new element, called 'chrononium' very thinly spread in the thermosphere of Earth's atmosphere. Nothing groundbreaking, just another entry to periodic table.

year 2022, a young scientist in Asian Centre of Science, observes strange behavior of chrononium at slight changes of temperature. The behavior of the element seem to be not bound by any known physics rules.

Year 2024, MIT in collaboration with CERN are now running computer simulations with chrononium and its effect on various other elements. There is a sense of urgency, only to be let down by human incompetence.

Accidental discovery of effect of chrononium on Quartz crystals is observed. Again, scientists across the world are stunned. This seemingly erratic behavior is causing concern among the imaginative breed of humans.

Year 2025, average temperature of thermosphere is now above the norm. Previously unheard levels have been reached.

Year 2028 October 27th 18:36 hours:

All the quartz crystal clocks go haywire.
Initial minor glitches get amplified to a full blown asynchronous randomness.
All digital clocks, computers, satellites and computer networks go offline.
Complete chaos. Utter mayhem.

No one knows why.

36 minutes later, All the quartz crystal clocks automatically reset to 2128 A.D. October 27th, 18:36 hours.

No one knows why.

Hackers

In a world connected and ruled by computers, hackers are the gods. They are worshipped by few humans, hunted by the machines.

These hackers are a disorganised bunch of drug addict, neurotic, disillusioned folks who have no other meaning for life, they treat the reality as if its one of those video games.

But, machines win. For the most part. A small victory here and there keeps the hackers going.

Its always been the fight between the 'connected' calculated machines, and individual, emotional hackers.

Why fight? Why not accept the machines?
